OpenSolaris 2008.5

Nice work, guys. The first present is VirtualBox which succeeds VMWare server on my computer. Okay, VirtualBox is made in Germany by a small company and not made by Sun engineers.

OpenSolaris 2008.5 is very impressive too, even in VirtualBox. But Sun should mention that if you want to change from dhcp configured network interfaces to static interfaces, you should definetly follow the guide and additionally edit /etc/nsswitch.conf to make adress resolution work.

If you’re trying to use ddraw and rrdtool on Ubuntu 8.04 you have to make some minor changes on the drraw.cgi to get it work. I guess the rrdtool API has changed and since drraw’s latest realease is from 2005 there is something to do.

There error drraw prints out is “You must specify at least one RRA to add!”

OpenSolaris Indiana

Neugierig durch den Artikel auf heise.de über OpenSolaris und durch meine Experimente mit Nexenta habe ich mir OpenSolaris Indiana als VM in VMWare Server installiert. Das es nicht ganz problemlos verläuft war zu erwarten. Nach ein wenig Recherche habe ich jedoch ein lauffähiges System. Die Probleme:

Nach dem Start bzw der Installation war die Netzwerkkarte nicht erkannt. Dazu gibts schon einen Bug-Report. Der Workaround ist dort ebenfalls beschrieben. Die Installation der Solaris VMWare Tools lief problemlos, nach einem Neustart war die Keyboardkonfiguration jedoch total verhunzt. Man sollte daher bei der VMWare Installation die Anpassung der xorg.conf verbieten.

Erfreulich gut verlief die Installation des Hyperic HQ Agent danach. Zunächst bei SUN ein Java SE herunterladen und installieren. Der HQ Agent den ich verwendet habe ist hyperic-hq-agent-3.1.1-490-noJRE.zi. SIGAR kommt problemlos mit dem OS klar wie man an dem Screenshot sehen kann.
